About AR15 Handguard
What Is an AR-15 Handguard
An AR-15 handguard is a component that surrounds the barrel and gas system, providing heat protection for the shooter's support hand, mounting points for accessories, and structural rigidity to the upper receiver assembly. Handguards attach to the upper receiver at the barrel nut and extend forward toward the muzzle device. AR-15 handguards are available in 2 main configurations: drop-in and free-float.
TactaBlue stocks AR-15 handguards from Midwest Industries, Bravo Company Manufacturing (BCM), Aero Precision, Geissele Automatics, Daniel Defense, and Magpul in M-LOK, KeyMod, and Picatinny rail configurations.
Drop-In vs Free-Float Handguards
Drop-in handguards mount between the delta ring at the upper receiver and the handguard cap at the front sight base. Drop-in handguards contact the barrel at 2 points, which allows barrel harmonics to transfer to the handguard and affects point-of-impact consistency. Drop-in handguards install without tools in under 2 minutes and cost $20-$80.
Free-float handguards mount only to the barrel nut at the upper receiver and have zero contact with the barrel along their entire length. This isolation eliminates handguard pressure on the barrel and improves mechanical accuracy by 0.5-1.0 MOA (minute of angle) at 100 yards (91.4 m). Free-float handguards require a low-profile gas block with a diameter of 0.625 inches (15.9 mm), 0.750 inches (19.1 mm), or 0.875 inches (22.2 mm) that fits inside the handguard's inner diameter.
Types of AR-15 Handguards
AR-15 handguards use 3 primary accessory mounting systems: M-LOK, KeyMod, and Picatinny quad rail. Each system provides a method for attaching lights, lasers, foregrips, bipods, and sling mounts to the handguard surface.
M-LOK Handguards
M-LOK (Modular Lock) is a negative-space mounting system developed by Magpul Industries. M-LOK uses oblong slots milled into the handguard surface at regular intervals. Accessories mount by inserting a T-nut into the slot and tightening a screw to lock the accessory in place. M-LOK became the dominant AR-15 handguard attachment system after the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) selected M-LOK over KeyMod following comparative testing in 2017.
M-LOK handguards weigh 2-6 oz (57-170 g) less than comparable Picatinny quad rail handguards because M-LOK eliminates unused rail material. Accessories attach only where needed, keeping the handguard slim and lightweight. M-LOK slot spacing follows a standard pattern that maintains compatibility across manufacturers.
KeyMod Handguards
KeyMod uses keyhole-shaped slots that accept accessories with a hook-and-rotate mounting method. KeyMod was developed by VLTOR Weapon Systems and Noveske Rifleworks as an open-source alternative to proprietary rail systems. KeyMod lost market share to M-LOK after the 2017 USSOCOM evaluation demonstrated that M-LOK provided superior repeatability and retention strength. KeyMod handguards remain functional but have a declining accessory ecosystem compared to M-LOK.
Picatinny Quad Rail Handguards
Picatinny quad rail handguards feature MIL-STD-1913 rails on all 4 sides: top (12 o'clock), bottom (6 o'clock), left (9 o'clock), and right (3 o'clock). Quad rails provide the most accessory mounting surface of any handguard type and accept any MIL-STD-1913 compatible accessory without adapters. Quad rail handguards weigh 8-16 oz (227-454 g) depending on length and material, making quad rails the heaviest handguard option. Daniel Defense Omega Rail, Midwest Industries Quad Rail, and Troy Industries Alpha Rail are 3 widely used Picatinny quad rail systems.
AR-15 Handguard Lengths
AR-15 handguard length must match or be shorter than the barrel and gas system length to prevent the handguard from extending past the muzzle. Handguard lengths range from 4 inches (102 mm) for AR-15 pistols to 15 inches (381 mm) for rifle-length builds.
Carbine-Length Handguards (7-9 Inches / 178-229 mm)
Carbine-length handguards pair with 10.3-12.5 inch (262-318 mm) barrels using carbine-length gas systems with a gas port distance of 7.0 inches (178 mm) from the upper receiver face. A 7-inch handguard provides clearance for a standard front sight base or gas block. A 9-inch handguard extends past the gas block and covers the gas tube, requiring a low-profile gas block.
Mid-Length and Rifle-Length Handguards (10-15 Inches / 254-381 mm)
Mid-length gas systems have a gas port distance of 9.0 inches (229 mm) and pair with 14.5-16 inch (368-406 mm) barrels. A 13-inch handguard on a 16-inch barrel provides approximately 2.5 inches (63.5 mm) of exposed barrel ahead of the handguard for muzzle device clearance. A 15-inch handguard on a 16-inch barrel leaves approximately 0.5 inches (12.7 mm) of clearance ahead of the handguard, which accommodates standard A2 flash hiders and most muzzle brakes but may not clear longer suppressor mounts.
Top AR-15 Handguard Brands
Five manufacturers dominate the AR-15 free-float handguard market: Midwest Industries, Aero Precision, Geissele Automatics, BCM, and Daniel Defense.
Midwest Industries
Midwest Industries produces the Combat Rail and Slim Line series in M-LOK configurations. The Midwest Industries Combat Rail weighs 9.1 oz (258 g) in the 15-inch length and uses a proprietary barrel nut with an integrated anti-rotation tab. Midwest Industries handguards are machined from 6061-T6 aluminum with Type III hard-coat anodizing and are available in lengths from 7 to 15 inches.
Aero Precision ATLAS and Enhanced Series
Aero Precision offers 2 handguard lines: the ATLAS S-ONE and R-ONE in M-LOK, and the Enhanced series with a proprietary barrel nut that integrates directly into the upper receiver. The ATLAS S-ONE weighs 8.0 oz (227 g) in the 15-inch length and features a slim profile with M-LOK slots at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions. The Enhanced series uses a barrel nut that threads into Aero Precision M4E1 Enhanced upper receivers and adds rigidity by creating a larger contact surface between the handguard and upper receiver.
Geissele MK4, MK8, MK13, and MK16
Geissele Automatics produces 4 handguard models: the MK4 (quad rail with M-LOK sides), MK8 (M-LOK only), MK13 (super modular with continuous top rail), and MK16 (M-LOK with narrow profile). Geissele handguards are machined from 6061-T6 aluminum and use a proprietary barrel nut torqued to 40 ft-lb (54.2 N·m). The MK16 weighs 10.7 oz (303 g) in the 13.5-inch length and has been adopted by USSOCOM for the Block III upper receiver configuration.
How to Install a Free-Float AR-15 Handguard
To install a free-float AR-15 handguard, remove the existing handguard and barrel nut, install the new barrel nut, and slide the handguard over the barrel.
- Secure the upper receiver in an upper receiver vise block or reaction rod clamped in a bench vise.
- Remove the existing barrel nut using an armorer's wrench. Standard mil-spec barrel nuts require 30-80 ft-lb (40.7-108.5 N·m) of torque to remove.
- Install the low-profile gas block and gas tube, if not already in place. Align the gas port hole in the gas block with the gas port hole in the barrel.
- Apply anti-seize compound to the barrel nut threads on the upper receiver.
- Thread the new barrel nut onto the upper receiver by hand, then torque to the manufacturer's specification (typically 30-80 ft-lb / 40.7-108.5 N·m depending on the handguard system).
- Slide the handguard over the barrel nut and secure with the provided mounting screws or locking mechanism.
- Verify gas tube alignment by visually inspecting that the gas tube passes freely through the barrel nut without contacting any surface.

AR15 Handguard — Common Questions
Drop-in handguards mount between the delta ring and front sight base, contacting the barrel at 2 points and transferring barrel harmonics to the handguard. Free-float handguards attach only at the barrel nut and have zero contact with the barrel along their length. Free-float handguards improve mechanical accuracy by 0.5-1.0 MOA at 100 yards (91.4 m) by eliminating pressure on the barrel. Free-float installation requires a low-profile gas block and removal of the front sight base on rifles with fixed front sights.
M-LOK is better for most AR-15 applications because M-LOK handguards weigh 2-6 oz (57-170 g) less than Picatinny quad rails and provide a slimmer grip surface. USSOCOM selected M-LOK over KeyMod in 2017 testing for superior retention and repeatability. Picatinny quad rails remain preferred for builds that require continuous rail surface on all 4 sides and maximum accessory mounting flexibility without adapters.
AR-15 handguard length depends on barrel length and muzzle device. A 15-inch handguard on a 16-inch barrel leaves 0.5 inches (12.7 mm) of exposed barrel for a standard A2 flash hider. A 13-inch handguard on a 16-inch barrel provides 2.5 inches (63.5 mm) of clearance for longer muzzle devices and suppressor mounts. The handguard must not extend past the muzzle. Match the handguard length to the gas system length, barrel length, and planned muzzle device.
To install a free-float AR-15 handguard, use an upper receiver vise block or reaction rod, bench vise, armorer's wrench sized for the barrel nut, torque wrench calibrated to 30-80 ft-lb (40.7-108.5 N·m), anti-seize compound, and the handguard-specific barrel nut wrench provided by the manufacturer. Some handguard systems include proprietary barrel nut wrenches that do not interchange with standard armorer's wrenches.
Yes, most free-float AR-15 handguards fit standard mil-spec AR-15 upper receivers with standard barrel nut threads (1.000-20 UNF). Each handguard brand uses its own proprietary barrel nut that threads onto the standard receiver threads. Exceptions include Aero Precision Enhanced handguards, which require Aero M4E1 Enhanced upper receivers with a proprietary barrel nut interface. Verify barrel nut compatibility with the upper receiver before purchasing.
