About Barrels & Muzzle Devices
Plan B Muzzle Devices
A Plan B muzzle device is a suppressor-ready muzzle brake, flash hider, or thread adapter manufactured by Rearden that uses a standardized HUB taper-mount interface to connect any HUB-compatible suppressor to any threaded barrel. The Plan B mounting system replaces the proprietary Quick-Detach (QD) mounts that lock each suppressor to a single brand's muzzle device, and a single HUB adapter allows one suppressor to mount on multiple rifles and pistols with different calibers and thread pitches. Plan B muzzle devices thread onto barrel pitches from 1/2x28 threads per inch (TPI) to M26x1.5 metric, and the 1.375x24 TPI HUB interface connects to suppressors from Dead Air, SilencerCo, YHM (Yankee Hill Machine), and other HUB-compatible manufacturers. This guide covers the Plan B system, HUB mounting, Plan B muzzle device types, compatible suppressors, installation, and aftermarket options.
What Is the Plan B Mounting System?
The Plan B mounting system is a universal suppressor mounting platform designed by Rearden Manufacturing that uses a 25-degree tapered interface called the HUB to lock a suppressor onto a muzzle device. The HUB interface threads at 1.375x24 TPI and uses a tapered cone that centers the suppressor bore concentrically to the barrel bore within 0.001 inches (0.025 mm) Total Indicated Runout (TIR). The taper creates a metal-to-metal seal that eliminates the carbon lock and gas leakage common in ratchet-style and lug-style QD mounts.
How Does the Plan B System Work?
The Plan B system works by separating the suppressor mount into 2 components: the Plan B muzzle device (threaded onto the barrel) and the HUB adapter (threaded into the suppressor's rear mount). The muzzle device has a male 25-degree taper, and the HUB adapter has a matching female taper. The shooter threads the suppressor with its HUB adapter onto the Plan B muzzle device, and the taper self-centers the suppressor on the bore axis. Tightening the suppressor by hand or with a wrench creates a repeatable lockup with zero point-of-impact shift between removal and reinstallation.
What Are the Benefits of a Taper Mount Design?
A taper mount design provides 4 benefits over ratchet-lock and direct-thread suppressor mounts: self-centering concentricity, zero point-of-impact shift, resistance to carbon lock, and a universal interface across calibers. The 25-degree taper wedges the suppressor into alignment, and the metal-to-metal contact prevents carbon buildup from seizing the connection. Ratchet-lock mounts from SureFire and Dead Air Keymo require proprietary muzzle devices for each suppressor brand, and direct-thread mounts loosen under sustained fire.

Plan B Accessories
Rearden sells 4 accessories for the Plan B system: blast shields, thread protectors, wrenches, and shim kits.
Plan B Blast Shield
The Plan B blast shield is a cylindrical shroud that threads onto the Plan B muzzle device's HUB taper and redirects muzzle blast forward, away from the shooter and adjacent shooters. The blast shield replaces the suppressor when sound suppression is not needed but concussion reduction is required, and the blast shield fits any Plan B muzzle device with a HUB interface.
Plan B Shim Kits
Plan B shim kits contain stainless steel shims in 0.001 to 0.030 inch (0.025 to 0.762 mm) thicknesses for timing the muzzle device to the correct rotational orientation. Rearden sells shim kits in 4 thread sizes: 1/2 inch, 5/8 inch, M24x1.5, and M26x1.5.
HUB-Compatible Suppressors
The Plan B HUB interface is compatible with suppressors from 6 manufacturers: Dead Air, SilencerCo, YHM, OCL, Rearden (Atlas and Charlie models), and other suppressors with a 1.375x24 TPI rear mount. Dead Air Nomad and Primal suppressors accept the HUB adapter directly. SilencerCo Omega 300 and Hybrid 46 require a Charlie or Atlas adapter from Rearden. YHM Turbo and Resonator suppressors accept the HUB mount after removing the factory Kurz QD adapter.
Can One Suppressor Fit Multiple Rifles With Plan B?
Yes, one suppressor with a HUB adapter fits every rifle that has a Plan B muzzle device installed, regardless of caliber or thread pitch. A Dead Air Nomad 30 with a Rearden HUB adapter mounts on a 5.56 NATO AR-15 with a 1/2x28 Plan B flash hider, a .308 bolt-action rifle with a 5/8x24 Plan B brake, and a 7.62x39 AK-47 with a 14x1 LH Plan B Krink device. The shooter swaps the suppressor between rifles in under 5 seconds.
How to Install a Plan B Muzzle Device
To install a Plan B muzzle device, remove the existing muzzle device, stack shims from the Plan B shim kit onto the barrel threads, thread the Plan B device clockwise, and torque to 20 to 30 foot-pounds (27 to 41 N·m) with the device timed to the correct orientation. Flash hiders with a closed bottom should time to 6 o'clock, and symmetrical brakes require no specific timing. Apply a thin coat of anti-seize compound to the barrel threads before installation to prevent galling between dissimilar metals.
Aftermarket Plan B Options
Aftermarket manufacturers produce 3 types of Plan B-compatible products: recessed (low-profile) HUB adapters, custom-finish muzzle devices, and shortest-overall-length (SOL) setups. Wolfpack Armory manufactures recessed Plan B adapters that reduce the overall length of the suppressor-and-muzzle-device stack by 0.5 to 1.0 inches (12.7 to 25.4 mm). Aftermarket Plan B muzzle devices are available in Cerakote, nitride, and DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) finishes. Shooters building the shortest possible suppressed rifle combine a recessed HUB adapter with a compact Plan B flash hider and a short suppressor such as the Dead Air Nomad L or SilencerCo Omega 300. Shooters who need standalone recoil reduction without a suppressor can compare muzzle brakes, and those who need a standard Mil-Spec flash hider can browse A2 flash hiders and compensators.
Plan B System Maintenance
Plan B system maintenance requires 3 practices: cleaning the taper surfaces after every shooting session, inspecting the shim stack for compression, and applying anti-seize compound to the barrel threads every 500 rounds. Carbon buildup on the 25-degree taper interface prevents a flush seat and introduces concentricity error. Wipe both the male and female taper surfaces with a carbon solvent and a clean patch after each session. Check that the shim stack has not compressed or shifted, and re-torque the muzzle device to the manufacturer's specification.
Barrels & Muzzle Devices — Common Questions
A Plan B muzzle device is a suppressor-ready muzzle brake, flash hider, or thread adapter made by Rearden that uses a 1.375x24 TPI HUB taper-mount interface to connect any HUB-compatible suppressor to any threaded barrel. The Plan B system replaces proprietary QD mounts and allows one suppressor to mount on multiple rifles with different calibers and thread pitches.
Plan B HUB adapters are compatible with suppressors from Dead Air (Nomad, Primal), SilencerCo (Omega 300, Hybrid 46), YHM (Turbo, Resonator), OCL (Polonium), and Rearden (Atlas, Charlie). Any suppressor with a 1.375x24 TPI rear mount accepts a Rearden HUB adapter.
The Plan B taper mount uses a 25-degree tapered metal-to-metal seal that does not trap carbon between locking surfaces. Ratchet-lock and lug-style QD mounts have recessed detents and grooves that accumulate carbon fouling and seize after sustained fire. The smooth taper surface of the Plan B system wipes clean with a solvent patch.
Plan B muzzle devices are available in 8 thread pitches: 1/2x28 TPI, 5/8x24 TPI, 5/8x32 TPI, 9/16x24 TPI, 9/16x28 TPI, 1/2x36 TPI, 14x1 LH metric, and 24x1.5 mm metric. The thread pitch must match the barrel's muzzle threads.
