About Cases, Packs & Range Bags

Gun Cases with Locks

A gun case with lock is a protective firearm container with an integrated or external locking mechanism that secures the case against unauthorized access during transport and storage. Gun cases with locks are available for pistols, rifles, shotguns, and Short Barreled Rifles (SBRs) in hard shell and soft shell configurations. Locking gun cases serve 4 purposes: compliance with state and federal firearm transport laws, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requirements for checked baggage, child-access prevention during home storage, and theft deterrence during vehicle transport. TactaBlue carries locking gun cases from Condition 1, Nanuk, Pelican, Plano, Vaultek, and StopBox in sizes from 11 inches (27.9 cm) to 55 inches (139.7 cm).

TactaBlue stocks locking gun cases alongside dedicated pistol cases with pre-cut foam, lid organizers, and multi-pistol configurations from Condition 1, Nanuk, and Pelican for handgun-specific transport and storage.

Gun Case Lock Types

Keyed Padlocks

Keyed padlocks are external locks that thread through molded padlock holes in the case body and secure the lid to the base with a hardened steel shackle. Keyed padlocks provide the highest resistance to tampering — a hardened steel padlock requires a bolt cutter or angle grinder to defeat, while combination locks and cable locks are vulnerable to shimming and prying. Use brass or stainless steel padlocks for gun cases stored in humid environments to prevent lock body corrosion. Most hard shell gun cases include 2 padlock holes, one on each side of the handle.

Combination Locks

Combination locks use a 3-digit or 4-digit numeric code set by the owner to secure the gun case without a physical key. Combination locks eliminate the risk of lost keys and allow multiple authorized users to access the case with a shared code. The Condition 1 branded cable lock uses a 3-pin combination with a push-button release mechanism. Reset the combination code on a new combination lock before first use — factory default codes (000 or 0000) are the first codes an unauthorized person attempts.

TSA-Approved Locks

TSA-approved locks have a master keyhole that allows TSA agents to open the lock during checked baggage inspection without the passenger present. TSA-approved locks display the Travel Sentry logo (a red diamond) or Safe Skies logo on the lock body. TSA-approved locks are designed for general luggage — the TSA firearm transport rule (49 CFR 1540.111) requires that the passenger retain the sole key or combination to the locked firearm container. Use non-TSA padlocks for checked firearm cases, because TSA master keys allow any TSA agent to open a TSA-approved lock without the owner's knowledge or presence.

Cable Locks

Cable locks use a flexible steel cable that threads through the padlock holes of a gun case and secures with a keyed or combination lock body. Cable locks allow one lock to secure both sides of a case through a single continuous cable. Cable locks are lighter and more compact than padlocks for travel. The steel cable is thinner than a padlock shackle and is more vulnerable to cutting with bolt cutters — use cable locks for deterrence and legal compliance rather than high-security applications.

Biometric and Digital Locks

Biometric gun cases use fingerprint scanners or digital keypads that unlock the case with a registered fingerprint or Personal Identification Number (PIN) code. The Vaultek LifePod series uses a biometric fingerprint scanner that stores up to 20 fingerprints and opens in under 1 second. Digital keypad locks use a 4-digit to 8-digit PIN code entered on backlit buttons for low-light access. Biometric and digital locks require battery power — the Vaultek LifePod uses a rechargeable lithium-ion battery with a USB-C charging port and includes a backup key override for access during a dead battery.

StopBox Quick-Access Cases

StopBox produces mechanical quick-access gun cases that open without batteries, electronics, or combinations. The StopBox Pro uses a patented mechanical button sequence that the owner memorizes for sub-2-second access in low-light conditions. The StopBox U-Can is a cylindrical locking case that attaches inside vehicle consoles and cabinets. The StopBox Wall-Mounted model secures to a wall stud for bedside or closet access. StopBox cases use no electronic components, which eliminates battery failure as an access risk.

Chamber Locks

The Chamber Lock Pro is a barrel-inserted locking device that blocks the chamber and prevents the firearm from being loaded or fired. The Chamber Lock Pro inserts a steel rod into the barrel from the muzzle end and locks in place with a keyed lock mechanism at the muzzle face. Chamber locks provide a visible indicator that the firearm is unloaded and secured. Chamber locks are not a substitute for a locked gun case during transport — use a chamber lock in combination with a locked case for maximum security.

Gun Case Lock Security Levels

Gun case locks fall into 4 security levels based on the tool and time required to defeat the lock.

  • Level 1 (deterrent) — cable locks and TSA-approved locks that prevent casual access and meet basic legal transport requirements. Defeat time: under 30 seconds with basic hand tools
  • Level 2 (standard) — combination padlocks and keyed padlocks with hardened steel shackles that resist prying and shimming. Defeat time: 1 to 5 minutes with bolt cutters
  • Level 3 (enhanced) — shrouded padlocks and straight-bar locks with hardened steel bodies that resist cutting. Defeat time: 5 to 15 minutes with an angle grinder
  • Level 4 (maximum) — biometric safes and steel gun vaults with anti-pry doors, reinforced hinges, and tamper alerts. Defeat time: 15 or more minutes with power tools

Firearm Transport Laws and Lock Requirements

Federal law under the Firearm Owners Protection Act (FOPA) of 1986 allows interstate transport of firearms through any state, provided the firearm is unloaded and stored in a locked container separate from ammunition in the passenger compartment. FOPA safe passage applies only to travelers passing through a state — stopping for extended periods beyond fuel, food, and rest may void the FOPA protection. State transport laws vary — California requires all firearms transported in a vehicle to be stored in a locked container in the trunk or in a locked container in the vehicle, if the vehicle has no trunk. New York City requires a locked gun case for all firearm transport within city limits regardless of permit status.

TSA regulations under 49 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 1540.111 require firearms in checked airline baggage to be unloaded, stored in a hard-sided locked container, and declared to the airline at check-in. The passenger must retain the sole key or combination to the locked container. Airlines may impose additional requirements for case size, lock type, and ammunition packaging — verify airline-specific firearm transport policies before travel.

Gun Case Lock Maintenance

Maintain gun case locks by applying graphite lubricant or dry Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) lubricant to the keyhole and shackle mechanism every 6 months. Do not use wet oil lubricants inside keyed padlocks — wet lubricants attract dust and debris that jam the lock cylinder over time. Test combination lock codes monthly to verify the combination mechanism operates correctly. Replace padlock keys immediately, if a key bends or shows wear on the teeth. Store backup keys in a separate secure location from the gun case. Charge biometric safe batteries to full capacity every 3 months during storage, and replace rechargeable batteries every 2 to 3 years or when the battery no longer holds a charge past 30 days.

Questions
