About KeyMod Accessories

KeyMod Accessories

KeyMod accessories are the grips, hand stops, rail covers, Picatinny rail sections, handguards, sling mounts, light mounts, bipod adapters, and barrel nut tools designed for the Keyhole Modular (KeyMod) mounting system — an open-source attachment interface created by Eric Kincel at VLTOR Weapon Systems that uses keyhole-shaped cutouts in handguards to secure accessories without full-length Picatinny rails. KeyMod accessories provide 4 benefits: quick installation through a twist-and-lock mechanism, precision fit from the keyhole lug engagement, modular layout that allows accessory placement at any KeyMod slot position, and compatibility with battle-tested materials including aircraft-grade aluminum, 416 stainless steel hardware, and polymer covers. KeyMod accessories mount to AR-15 rifles, pistol-caliber carbines, and bolt-action chassis systems with KeyMod-compatible handguards. This guide covers KeyMod accessory categories with specifications and pricing, the comparison between KeyMod and Modular Lock (M-LOK), KeyMod handguards, installation procedures, and the current market status of the KeyMod system.

KeyMod vs M-LOK

KeyMod and M-LOK are 2 competing handguard accessory mounting systems that both eliminate the weight and bulk of full-length Picatinny quad rails, but M-LOK has become the dominant standard based on military testing results and broader manufacturer adoption.

History of KeyMod and M-LOK

Eric Kincel at VLTOR Weapon Systems developed the KeyMod system as an open-source specification, meaning any manufacturer can produce KeyMod-compatible products without licensing fees or royalties. Magpul Industries developed the M-LOK system in 2014 based on the company's 2007 Magpul Original Equipment (MOE) prototype, and Magpul released M-LOK as a free-licensed specification. A 5-person engineering team at Magpul designed the M-LOK slot geometry and T-nut locking mechanism. Both KeyMod and M-LOK were released to the firearms industry as alternatives to the heavy Military Standard 1913 (MIL-STD-1913) Picatinny rail quad rail systems.

KeyMod vs M-LOK: Test Results and Market Status

The United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) conducted a comparative drop test between KeyMod and M-LOK mounting systems, and M-LOK achieved 100% accessory retention while KeyMod achieved 33% accessory retention during the same drop protocol. The USSOCOM test results accelerated the firearms industry's shift toward M-LOK as the primary handguard mounting standard. Most handguard manufacturers — including Bravo Company Manufacturing (BCM), Geissele Automatics, Midwest Industries, and Magpul — now produce M-LOK handguards as their primary product line. KeyMod handguards and accessories remain in production from BCM, Samson Manufacturing, ERGO Grips, Impact Weapons Components, and other manufacturers, but new handguard designs from major brands launch in M-LOK configurations only. KeyMod remains a functional and reliable mounting system for shooters who already own KeyMod handguards.

Pros and Cons of KeyMod

There are 3 advantages and 3 disadvantages of the KeyMod system compared to M-LOK:

  • KeyMod advantages: faster tool-free installation for some accessory types (twist-and-lock versus M-LOK's screw-and-T-nut), open-source specification with no licensing restrictions, and lighter keyhole cutouts that remove more material from the handguard wall
  • KeyMod disadvantages: lower accessory retention under impact (33% versus M-LOK's 100% in USSOCOM testing), declining manufacturer support with fewer new product releases, and narrower accessory selection compared to M-LOK

Installing KeyMod Accessories

To install a KeyMod accessory, align the accessory's keyhole-shaped lug with the KeyMod slot in the handguard, insert the lug into the wide end of the keyhole, slide the accessory forward until the lug seats into the narrow end of the keyhole, and tighten the retention screw to lock the accessory in place. KeyMod accessories require a 3/32-inch hex key or Torx T20 driver depending on the manufacturer. Tighten KeyMod retention screws to 12 to 15 inch-pounds (1.4 to 1.7 newton-meters or N·m) of torque. Apply a small amount of blue thread-locking compound (Loctite 242) to the screw threads to prevent loosening from recoil vibration during firing.

KeyMod and M-LOK Cross-Compatibility

KeyMod accessories do not fit M-LOK handguards, and M-LOK accessories do not fit KeyMod handguards, because the two systems use different slot geometries — KeyMod uses keyhole-shaped cutouts with a twist-and-lock lug, while M-LOK uses rectangular slots with a T-nut that rotates 90 degrees behind the handguard wall. Shooters who switch from a KeyMod handguard to an M-LOK handguard must replace all KeyMod-specific accessories (grips, hand stops, rail covers, sling mounts) with M-LOK equivalents. Picatinny rail sections bolted to either KeyMod or M-LOK slots accept the same Picatinny-compatible accessories (optics, lights, lasers, foregrips), so Picatinny-mount accessories transfer between systems without replacement.

Questions

KeyMod Accessories — Common Questions

No, KeyMod accessories use keyhole-shaped lugs that do not fit M-LOK rectangular slots, and M-LOK T-nut hardware does not fit KeyMod keyhole cutouts. The two systems are not cross-compatible. Picatinny rail sections bolted to either system accept the same Picatinny-mount accessories, so lights, optics, and lasers on Picatinny mounts transfer between KeyMod and M-LOK handguards.

Yes, KeyMod remains a functional and reliable accessory mounting system for shooters who already own KeyMod handguards. The USSOCOM drop test showed M-LOK outperformed KeyMod in accessory retention (100% vs 33%), and most new handguard releases use M-LOK, but KeyMod accessories from BCM, Samson, ERGO, and Impact Weapons Components are still in production and available for purchase.

Align the accessory lug with the keyhole slot, insert the lug into the wide end, slide the accessory forward into the narrow end, and tighten the retention screw to 12 to 15 inch-pounds (1.4 to 1.7 N·m) with a 3/32-inch hex key or Torx T20 driver. Apply blue thread-locking compound to the screw to prevent loosening from recoil.

BCM, Samson Manufacturing, ERGO Grips, Impact Weapons Components, VISM, Timber Creek Outdoors, MIM MFG, and GunTec still manufacture KeyMod grips, hand stops, rail covers, Picatinny rail sections, sling mounts, light mounts, and bipod adapters. BCM remains the largest KeyMod accessory manufacturer with vertical grips, KAG angled grips, rail covers, Picatinny sections, light mounts, QD sling mounts, and barrel nut hardware.

Buy an M-LOK handguard for a new AR-15 build because M-LOK has broader manufacturer support, a wider accessory selection, and higher accessory retention (100% vs 33% in USSOCOM testing) compared to KeyMod. New handguard designs from BCM, Geissele, Midwest Industries, and Magpul launch in M-LOK configurations, and M-LOK accessory availability continues to grow while KeyMod accessory releases have slowed.

KeyMod is a direct-mount system where accessories lock into keyhole-shaped handguard cutouts at the handguard surface level, while a Picatinny rail is an external raised rail with slots that adds height and weight to the handguard. KeyMod accessories sit flush to the handguard, reducing weight and profile. Picatinny rails provide stronger mechanical lockup for heavy optics and night-vision devices. KeyMod handguards accept bolt-on Picatinny rail sections for accessories that require MIL-STD-1913 mounting.

No, KeyMod handguards cannot be converted to accept M-LOK accessories because the keyhole-shaped cutouts are a different geometry than M-LOK rectangular slots, and the slot dimensions cannot be modified. Replace the entire handguard with an M-LOK handguard to use M-LOK accessories. Picatinny rail sections mounted to KeyMod slots accept any Picatinny-compatible accessory, providing a workaround for accessories available only in Picatinny-mount configurations.
