About Duty / Tactical Holsters

Appendix Carry Holsters

Appendix carry holsters are Inside the Waistband (IWB) holsters designed to position a handgun at the front of the body between the navel and hip bone, typically at the 12 to 2 o'clock position for right-handed shooters and 10 to 12 o'clock for left-handed shooters. Appendix Inside the Waistband (AIWB) holsters use a rigid shell, concealment claw, and wedge to press the grip inward against the body for reduced printing under a T-shirt, button-up, or cover garment. AIWB holsters deliver 3 primary advantages over behind-the-hip carry: faster draw speed along a straight line to the target, stronger weapon retention with the firearm in front of the body, and cleaner concealment when bending or sitting. TactaBlue stocks appendix carry holsters from Tier 1 Concealed, Alien Gear, T.Rex Arms, Bravo Concealment, BlackPoint Tactical, Galco, DeSantis, Eclipse Holsters, and Slim Fit Holsters alongside IWB holsters, concealed carry holsters, and Outside the Waistband (OWB) holsters.

What Makes an Appendix Carry Holster Different from a Standard IWB Holster

A dedicated AIWB holster differs from a standard IWB holster in 5 design features: neutral cant angle, concealment claw or wing, muzzle wedge, rounded muzzle end, and a shell shaped for the flatter front-of-body position. Standard IWB holsters use a forward cant of 10 to 15 degrees optimized for 3 to 5 o'clock hip carry, while AIWB holsters use a neutral 0-degree cant or slight 5-degree forward tilt that keeps the grip vertical for a natural draw from the front waistband. Repurposing a standard IWB holster for appendix carry produces more printing, less comfort, and a less consistent reholster angle. Start with a holster built for AIWB carry, if appendix is the intended carry position.

Appendix Carry Holster Components

Concealment Claw and Wing

A concealment claw is a small polymer or metal tab attached to the holster body that presses against the inside of the gun belt and rotates the grip inward toward the body. The claw reduces printing by leveraging belt tension to tuck the widest part of the handgun — the grip — flat against the abdomen. Carry a compact or full-size pistol with a claw, if concealment under a single-layer shirt is the goal. A modular wing (ModWing) is an adjustable version of the claw that allows height and angle tuning. The Tier 1 Concealed AXIS ELITE ($144.99) and T.Rex Arms Raptor both include integrated concealment claws.

Wedge and Muzzle Pad

A foam wedge on the body-facing side of the holster tilts the muzzle away from the body and pushes the grip inward, improving both comfort and concealment when sitting or bending. Wedge thickness ranges from 0.25 inches (6.4 mm) to 0.75 inches (19.1 mm) depending on body type and holster length. Add an aftermarket wedge from Dark Star Gear or Mastermind Tactics, if the holster does not include one from the factory. A thicker wedge relieves pressure on the lower abdomen by redistributing the muzzle contact point across a wider area.

Belt Clips and Attachment Hardware

AIWB holsters attach to the belt with 3 primary clip types: polymer J-hooks, Discreet Carry Concepts (DCC) metal clips, and pull-the-dot soft loops. DCC metal clips provide the strongest clamping force against the belt and sit flush under a tucked shirt. Polymer J-hooks are the most common factory clip and offer adjustable ride height through multiple mounting holes. Pull-the-dot loops thread through the belt for maximum stability during physical activity. The Tier 1 Concealed XIPHOS ELITE ($104.99) and the T1-M V2 ($69.99) ship with DCC clips as standard hardware.

Sweat Guard and Trigger Guard Coverage

The sweat guard is a raised lip of Kydex or leather that extends above the holster body between the slide and the carrier's skin to protect the firearm finish from perspiration and prevent skin contact with the rear sight or optic. Full sweat guards cover the entire rear of the slide, while mid-cut and combat-cut sweat guards stop below the rear sight for a faster grip acquisition. Full trigger guard coverage is the baseline safety requirement for any AIWB holster — the trigger guard must be completely enclosed by the holster material with no gaps that allow finger or fabric contact with the trigger.

Appendix Carry Holster Materials

Kydex AIWB Holsters

Kydex is a thermoplastic acrylic-polyvinyl chloride (PVC) sheet material that is vacuum-formed to the exact dimensions of a specific firearm model for precision retention and full trigger guard coverage. Kydex AIWB holsters provide an audible click when the firearm is seated, passive retention from the molded shell, and a service life that exceeds the firearm itself. Standard Kydex thickness for AIWB holsters is 0.080 inches (2.0 mm) for a balance of rigidity and weight, while duty-grade holsters use 0.093 inches (2.4 mm) for added structure. Boltaron is an alternative thermoplastic used by Alien Gear that offers similar molding properties with higher heat resistance than standard Kydex — Boltaron maintains its shape at temperatures up to 300°F (149°C) compared to 180°F (82°C) for Kydex, which prevents holster warping in a vehicle glove box or console during summer months.

Leather AIWB Holsters

Leather appendix carry holsters use vegetable-tanned cowhide or horsehide that molds to the firearm shape over a 2 to 4 week break-in period and develops a personalized fit. The Galco Stow-N-Go ($69.00) and Galco Walkabout 2.0 ($75.00) are leather IWB holsters suitable for appendix carry with a metal-reinforced holster mouth that prevents collapse during reholstering. Leather holsters absorb moisture and require periodic conditioning with a leather treatment product to prevent cracking. Choose a leather AIWB holster with a reinforced holster mouth, if safe reholstering without removing the holster from the waistband is a requirement.

Hybrid AIWB Holsters

Hybrid appendix holsters combine a Kydex retention shell with a leather or neoprene backing for the rigidity of Kydex and the comfort of a soft body-facing surface. The Falco Holsters A909 ($139.95) uses a Kydex shell covered in calfskin overlay with a supple leather backing, a removable anti-roll-out foot, and an attached sweat guard on both the holster and magazine carrier. The Crossbreed Rogue System pairs a leather backer with a Kydex shell and offers modular configuration for IWB, OWB, or appendix carry. Hybrid holsters print more than full-Kydex holsters due to the added thickness of the backing material — this tradeoff favors comfort over the slimmest possible profile.

Sidecar and Modular AIWB Holsters

A sidecar AIWB holster is a one-piece or hinged appendix rig that pairs the pistol holster with an attached spare magazine carrier for a balanced, streamlined front-of-body loadout. The Tier 1 Concealed AXIS ELITE ($144.99) is a hinged sidecar design that flexes in the middle to wrap around the body contour, keeping the pistol and spare magazine tight against the abdomen. The AGIS ELITE ($144.99) is a modular sidecar that allows the magazine carrier to be repositioned or removed. Sidecar holsters add approximately 1.5 inches (38.1 mm) of width compared to a standalone holster. A sidecar rig with a GLOCK 19 and a 15-round spare magazine provides 31 total rounds on the carrier's body. Use a standalone holster without a sidecar, if minimal bulk is the priority over reload speed.

Appendix Carry Holster Fitment by Handgun Platform

AIWB holsters are molded to exact firearm dimensions, and a holster made for one handgun model does not fit a different model. Compact and subcompact 9mm pistols are the most common AIWB platforms.

Appendix Carry Holster Adjustment and Setup

Ride Height and Cant

To adjust ride height on an AIWB holster, move the belt clip up or down through the multiple mounting holes on the holster body — a higher clip position seats the firearm deeper in the waistband, and a lower clip position raises the grip for faster access. Start with the muzzle sitting in the natural crease between the thigh and torso for the most comfortable AIWB position. Cant adjusts the angle of the grip — a neutral 0-degree cant keeps the grip vertical, and a slight 5-degree forward cant tilts the grip toward the belt buckle for a more natural wrist angle during the draw stroke.

Retention Tension

Adjust AIWB holster retention by turning the retention screw on the holster body clockwise to increase tension and counterclockwise to decrease tension until the holster produces an audible click when the firearm seats and releases with a firm, consistent pull. Test retention by holding the holster upside down — the firearm should not fall free. The retention screw adjusts the gap between the two halves of the Kydex shell at the trigger guard contact point. Check retention screw tightness monthly, because screws loosen over time from daily insertion and removal cycles.

Appendix Carry Safety

Appendix carry is safe with a dedicated AIWB holster that provides a rigid non-collapsible shell, full trigger guard coverage, and a sweat guard that prevents material from entering the holster mouth during reholstering. Reholster slowly and deliberately — look the muzzle into the holster mouth, clear the cover garment away from the holster opening, and guide the firearm straight down. The reholster step is the single highest-risk moment in AIWB carry. Practice the draw and reholster sequence with a triple-verified unloaded firearm at home before carrying loaded. Size up pants by 1 waist size to accommodate the holster without belt-line compression.

Appendix Carry for Different Body Types

AIWB carry works across a wide range of body types when the holster setup is adjusted for the individual carrier's build. Larger carriers benefit from higher clip placement, a strong concealment claw, and a thick wedge to tilt the grip inward — wearing the belt slightly higher on the abdomen opens room for the holster and improves reholstering clearance. The JX Tactical Fat Guy Holster is purpose-built for larger carriers with an extended body and higher ride configuration. Smaller-framed carriers and women benefit from a slim shell, a shorter muzzle length, and careful ride-height tuning to prevent the grip from pushing up into the ribs. The appendix carry position accommodates both right-handed and left-handed shooters by mirroring the holster placement from the 1-2 o'clock position to the 10-11 o'clock position.

Questions

Duty / Tactical Holsters — Common Questions

Appendix carry is a concealed carry method that positions the holster at the front of the waistband between the navel and hip bone, at the 12 to 2 o'clock position for right-handed shooters and 10 to 12 o'clock for left-handed shooters. Appendix Inside the Waistband (AIWB) carry provides a fast draw, strong weapon retention, and clean concealment under a single-layer shirt.

Yes, appendix carry is safe with a dedicated AIWB holster that has a rigid non-collapsible shell, full trigger guard coverage, and a sweat guard that blocks material from entering the holster mouth. Reholster slowly and deliberately by looking the muzzle into the holster, clearing the cover garment, and guiding the firearm straight down.

Yes, larger carriers carry AIWB by using higher clip placement, a strong concealment claw, a thick wedge, and wearing the belt slightly higher on the abdomen. The JX Tactical Fat Guy Holster is purpose-built for larger body types with an extended body and higher ride configuration.

Compact and subcompact 9mm pistols are the best platforms for appendix carry, including the Glock 19, Glock 43X, Glock 48, SIG Sauer P365, SIG P365XL, Smith & Wesson Shield Plus, and Springfield Hellcat. Micro-compacts conceal the easiest, and compact pistols offer the best balance of shootability and concealment.

No, a standard IWB holster is not recommended for appendix carry. AIWB holsters use a neutral cant, concealment claw compatibility, rounded muzzle ends, and a shell shaped for the front-of-body position. A standard IWB holster used at the appendix position produces more printing, less comfort, and a less consistent reholster angle.

AIWB stands for Appendix Inside the Waistband and refers to carrying a firearm inside the pants at the front of the body near the appendix area, at the 12 to 2 o'clock position for right-handed shooters.

A concealment claw is a small polymer or metal tab on the holster body that presses against the inside of the gun belt and rotates the grip inward toward the body to reduce printing. A modular wing (ModWing) is an adjustable version that allows height and angle tuning.

Appendix carry sits at the 12 to 2 o'clock position for right-handed shooters and the 10 to 12 o'clock position for left-handed shooters, with the 1 o'clock position being the most common starting point.
