About AR15 Charging Handle

What Is an AR-15 Charging Handle

An AR-15 charging handle is a T-shaped lever mounted inside the upper receiver that manually cycles the bolt carrier group (BCG) rearward to chamber a round, clear a malfunction, or lock the bolt open. The charging handle rides in a channel milled into the top of the upper receiver and engages the BCG through a hook that catches the charging handle latch cut on the bolt carrier.

Standard mil-spec charging handles have a small latch on the left side and require the shooter to reach over the optic with the support hand. Aftermarket charging handles from Radian Weapons, Geissele Automatics, and Bravo Company Manufacturing (BCM) address this limitation with extended latches, ambidextrous controls, and gas-deflection features for suppressed shooting.

Standard Mil-Spec Charging Handle

The mil-spec AR-15 charging handle is machined from 7075-T6 aluminum and weighs approximately 1.34 oz (38 g). The standard latch extends 0.36 inches (9.1 mm) from the handle body and requires a pinch grip between the thumb and index finger to operate. Mil-spec charging handles function reliably but offer limited ergonomics for shooters wearing gloves, operating in low-light conditions, or running optics with large objective housings.

Ambidextrous Charging Handles

Ambidextrous charging handles have latches on both sides of the handle body, allowing operation from either the left or right side. This design benefits left-handed shooters, shooters transitioning between shoulders, and anyone who operates the charging handle from the support side. Ambidextrous models add 0.1-0.5 oz (2.8-14 g) over mil-spec weight because of the additional latch mechanism and hardware.

Types of AR-15 Charging Handles

AR-15 charging handles are available in 4 main types: mil-spec, extended latch, ambidextrous, and side-charging. Each type addresses specific operational needs ranging from basic function to rapid manipulation under stress.

Extended Latch Charging Handles

Extended latch charging handles enlarge the left-side latch to 0.6-1.0 inches (15.2-25.4 mm) from the handle body, providing a larger contact surface for gloved hands. BCM GUNFIGHTER Mod 3, Mod 4, and Mod 44 offer 3 latch sizes: medium (Mod 3), large (Mod 4), and extra-large (Mod 44). Extended latch handles maintain a single-side design and weigh 1.4-1.6 oz (40-45 g).

Side-Charging Handles

Side-charging handles replace the standard rear-charging design with a reciprocating or non-reciprocating handle mounted on the left or right side of the upper receiver. Side-charging systems require a dedicated upper receiver and are not compatible with standard AR-15 uppers. Gibbz Arms and Bear Creek Arsenal produce non-reciprocating side-charging upper receivers that accept standard BCGs and AR-15 handguards.

Top AR-15 Charging Handle Brands

The AR-15 aftermarket charging handle market includes 5 dominant manufacturers: Radian Weapons, Geissele Automatics, BCM, Aero Precision, and Strike Industries. Each brand offers models ranging from $30 to $120.

Radian Raptor and Raptor-LT

The Radian Raptor is a fully ambidextrous charging handle machined from 7075-T6 aluminum with a Mil-Spec Type III hard-coat anodized finish. The Raptor weighs 1.50 oz (42.5 g) and features two independently functioning latches with aggressive textured paddles. The Raptor-LT uses an aluminum body with injection-molded polymer overmold latches, reducing weight to 1.30 oz (36.9 g) and cost by approximately 30% compared to the all-aluminum Raptor.

Radian designed both models with a gas-deflection shelf that redirects blowback gases away from the shooter's face when firing with a suppressor. The Raptor fits standard AR-15/M16 upper receivers and is compatible with all mil-spec bolt carrier groups.

Geissele Super Charging Handle (SCH) and Airborne Charging Handle (ACH)

The Geissele Super Charging Handle (SCH) features large ambidextrous paddles with checkered texture and a gas-redirecting geometry that channels gases forward and down. The SCH weighs 1.61 oz (45.6 g) and is machined from 7075-T6 aluminum with a black oxide or Desert Dirt Color (DDC) finish. The Geissele Airborne Charging Handle (ACH) uses smaller paddles than the SCH and weighs 1.35 oz (38.3 g), making the ACH suited for shooters who prefer a lower-profile handle that clears optics and helmet-mounted accessories.

BCMGUNFIGHTER Charging Handle

The BCMGUNFIGHTER charging handle from Bravo Company Manufacturing uses a patented latch system with a captured spring and steel roll pin that distributes force across 2 contact points rather than the single mil-spec roll pin. This design reduces stress on the roll pin by approximately 50%. BCMGUNFIGHTER handles are available in 3 latch sizes: Mod 3 (medium), Mod 4 (large), and Mod 44 (extra-large). All models weigh between 1.40-1.55 oz (39.7-43.9 g) and are machined from 7075-T6 aluminum.

How to Install an AR-15 Charging Handle

To install an AR-15 charging handle, separate the upper receiver from the lower receiver by pushing out the takedown pin and pivot pin. Pull the existing BCG and charging handle rearward out of the upper receiver. Insert the new charging handle into the channel at the rear of the upper receiver and push it forward until the latch catch engages. Reinsert the BCG behind the charging handle and push both components fully forward. Verify the charging handle latches securely by pulling rearward and releasing. The entire process requires no tools and takes under 60 seconds.

Choosing the Right Charging Handle

Charging handle selection depends on 3 primary factors: shooting application, suppressor use, and dominant hand.

  • Suppressed shooting: Select a charging handle with gas-deflection features, including the Radian Raptor, Geissele SCH, or BCMGUNFIGHTER Mod 4. Gas blowback from suppressors increases bolt carrier speed and directs combustion gases rearward through the charging handle channel.
  • Competition and 3-gun: Select an ambidextrous handle with large paddles for rapid manipulation during stage transitions. The Radian Raptor and Geissele SCH provide the largest paddle surfaces.
  • Home defense: Select an extended latch or ambidextrous handle that operates reliably under stress and in low-light conditions. The Radian Raptor-LT and BCMGUNFIGHTER Mod 3 balance cost, weight, and function for defensive use.
  • Left-handed shooters: Select a fully ambidextrous handle with equal-size latches on both sides. The Radian Raptor, Geissele SCH, and Aero Precision BREACH provide true ambidextrous operation.

Questions

AR15 Charging Handle — Common Questions

A charging handle on an AR-15 manually pulls the bolt carrier group (BCG) rearward to chamber a round from the magazine, clear a malfunction, or lock the bolt open on an empty magazine. The charging handle sits in a channel at the rear of the upper receiver and does not move during firing. The shooter operates the charging handle by pulling it rearward with the support hand while holding the pistol grip with the firing hand.

The best ambidextrous charging handle for AR-15 is the Radian Raptor, which features dual independently functioning latches machined from 7075-T6 aluminum with aggressive texture, gas-deflection shelves for suppressed shooting, and a weight of 1.50 oz (42.5 g). The Radian Raptor-LT offers similar functionality at a lower price point with polymer-overmolded latches and a weight of 1.30 oz (36.9 g).

Yes, a gas-deflection charging handle is recommended for suppressed AR-15 shooting. Suppressors increase back-pressure in the gas system by 15-30%, which forces additional combustion gases rearward through the charging handle channel and into the shooter's face. Gas-deflection charging handles from Radian (Raptor), Geissele (SCH), and BCM (GUNFIGHTER) redirect these gases forward and downward away from the shooter.

To install an AR-15 charging handle, push out the takedown and pivot pins to separate the upper and lower receivers. Pull the BCG and existing charging handle rearward out of the upper receiver. Slide the new charging handle into the channel at the rear of the upper receiver, insert the BCG behind the charging handle, and push both forward until the charging handle latch clicks into the locked position. No tools are required, and the process takes under 60 seconds.

Yes, all standard AR-15 charging handles share the same body dimensions and fit any mil-spec AR-15/M16 upper receiver. The differences between models are in latch design, latch size, material, weight, and features such as gas deflection and ambidextrous operation. Charging handles designed for AR-10/SR-25 platforms are larger and do not fit AR-15 upper receivers.
