About Beretta 92FS M9
Beretta 92FS Magazine Overview
The standard Beretta 92FS magazine is a double-stack steel body unit chambered in 9mm Parabellum with a 15-round flush-fit capacity. Beretta has manufactured this magazine design since the 92FS replaced the 92F in 1988, and the platform remains one of the most widely issued sidearm magazines in military and law enforcement use worldwide. Each magazine weighs approximately 2.4 oz (68 g) empty and measures 5.6 in (142 mm) in length.
The 92FS magazine uses a staggered-column feed geometry that transitions to a single-feed position at the feed lips. This design provides reliable feeding across a wide range of 9mm ammunition weights from 115 gr to 147 gr, including full metal jacket (FMJ), jacketed hollow point (JHP), and +P rated loads. Beretta 92FS Magazine Capacity Options
10-Round Magazines (State-Compliant, Model JMC80404)
The Beretta factory 10-round magazine (model JMC80404) uses the same steel body and feed lip geometry as the standard 15-round version but with a shorter spring and a blocking spacer inside the tube. These magazines are required in states with capacity restrictions, including California, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York. The 10-round mag sits flush with the grip and does not change the handling profile of the pistol. Weight is 2.1 oz (60 g) empty.
15-Round Magazines (Standard OEM, Model JMC86021)
The 15-round magazine (model JMC86021) is the factory-standard unit shipped with every Beretta 92FS sold in non-restricted states. It features a blued steel body, steel feed lips, a polymer follower, and a steel floor plate. This magazine has been the U.S. Military standard since the M9 adoption in 1985. Mec-Gar manufactures the OEM 15-round magazines under contract for Beretta, so aftermarket Mec-Gar 15-round magazines are functionally identical to the factory units.
17-Round and 18-Round Magazines
Mec-Gar produces a flush-fit 18-round magazine for the Beretta 92FS that adds 3 rounds over standard capacity without extending below the grip frame. This is achieved through tighter internal stacking tolerances and a redesigned follower. The 18-round Mec-Gar magazine uses an anti-friction coating on the follower and a high-tensile coil spring rated for over 5,000 loading cycles. Wilson Combat also offers a 17-round flush-fit option with an ETM (Elite Tactical Magazine) design.
20-Round Extended Magazines (Mec-Gar Plus 2)
The Mec-Gar Plus 2 system adds a polymer base pad to the standard 18-round magazine body, extending total capacity to 20 rounds. The base pad adds approximately 0.5 in (13 mm) to the overall magazine length and protrudes below the grip frame. This configuration is popular for competition shooting in USPSA and IDPA divisions where higher round counts reduce the number of reloads per stage. The 20 round mag maintains the same feed reliability as the standard-capacity version.
30-Round Extended Magazines
ProMag and other aftermarket manufacturers produce 30-round extended magazines for the Beretta 92FS. These magazines extend approximately 4.5 in (114 mm) below the grip frame and use a reinforced polymer or steel body. Reliability varies by manufacturer, and 30-round magazines require more frequent maintenance than standard-capacity units. The added weight of a fully loaded 30-round magazine (approximately 1.1 lb / 499 g) changes the balance point of the pistol noticeably. Consider pairing extended magazines with a sturdy Beretta 92 gun holster rated for the added length.
Beretta 92FS Magazine Compatibility
The Beretta 92FS magazine fits the following pistol models: 92FS, M9, 92F, 92G, 92D, 92 Brigadier, 92 Elite, 90-Two, 92 Vertec, and 92 Stock. All of these pistols share the same magazine well dimensions and locking notch position. The magazine does NOT fit the Beretta 92 Compact (92C), which uses a shorter magazine body with a different base plate configuration.
The Beretta 92 platform also includes compatibility with the CX4 Storm carbine when used with the Beretta 92-series magazine adapter insert. The CX4 Storm ships with a Px4 magazine well by default, so you must install the 92-series adapter (sold separately) before using 92FS magazines in the CX4. Once installed, all standard and extended 92FS magazines function in the carbine. The sand resistant M9 magazine (model C86021) is also interchangeable with the standard 92FS magazine and adds a sand-resistant follower and spring coating.
Magazine Construction and Components
Every Beretta 92FS magazine consists of 5 primary components:
- Steel body — Cold-rolled carbon steel tube with a blued or phosphate finish, 0.035 in (0.89 mm) wall thickness. The body includes witness holes at rounds 5, 10, and 15 for visual round count verification.
- Steel feed lips — Formed as part of the body tube, the feed lips control cartridge presentation angle at 3.5 degrees relative to the bore axis.
- Polymer follower — The follower rides on top of the coil spring and tilts the top cartridge into the feed position. OEM followers are orange or black depending on production year.
- Coil spring — Music wire compression spring with 8 to 10 active coils, providing approximately 4.5 lb (2 kg) of force when fully compressed with 15 rounds loaded.
- Floor plate — Steel or polymer base that locks into the magazine body via a retaining groove. The floor plate slides off for disassembly by depressing a small retention tab on the front face.
The magazine catch notch is stamped into the body at a fixed position 1.25 in (31.75 mm) from the base, which allows the magazine release button on the pistol frame to lock the magazine in place. Pair your magazines with quality Beretta 92FS grips for a secure hold during reloads.
OEM vs Aftermarket Beretta 92FS Magazines
Three primary manufacturers produce Beretta 92FS magazines:
Beretta Factory Magazines
Beretta factory mags carry the Beretta logo stamp on the base plate and body. These are manufactured by Mec-Gar under contract and then branded and packaged by Beretta. Factory magazines carry Beretta's lifetime warranty and retail between $30 and $40 per unit. They are the baseline standard for reliability testing and function verification.
Mec-Gar Magazines
Mec-Gar sells its own branded 92FS magazines at a lower price point ($20 to $28) than the Beretta-branded versions. Because Mec-Gar manufactures the OEM magazines for Beretta, the internal components, tolerances, and materials are identical. The only differences are the external branding and packaging. Mec-Gar also offers capacity options (18-round flush-fit and 20-round extended with the Mec-Gar Plus 2 base pad) that Beretta does not sell under its own brand.
ProMag Magazines
ProMag offers the lowest-cost Beretta 92FS magazines, typically $12 to $18 per unit. ProMag uses a different steel alloy and polymer follower design than the OEM specification. Reliability reports are mixed, with some users experiencing feed failures at round counts above 500. ProMag magazines are acceptable for range practice but are not recommended for duty, carry, or competition use.
Beretta 92FS Magazine Maintenance
Regular maintenance extends magazine service life from 3,000 to over 10,000 loading cycles. Follow this schedule:
Disassembly
Remove the floor plate by pressing the retention tab forward with a punch tool or bullet tip, then slide the floor plate off the body. The spring and follower will release under tension, so control them with your thumb as you remove the floor plate. Pull the spring and follower out of the body tube.
Cleaning
Wipe the interior of the magazine body with a dry cloth or nylon brush. Do not use oil or solvent inside the magazine body, as lubricants attract dust and carbon fouling that cause feed malfunctions. Clean the follower with a dry cloth and inspect for cracks or wear on the polymer surface. Inspect the feed lips for deformation by checking that both lips are level and parallel — a difference of more than 0.010 in (0.25 mm) between lip heights indicates the magazine should be replaced.
Spring Replacement
Replace the magazine spring every 3,000 to 5,000 loading cycles or when you notice the slide failing to lock back on an empty magazine. Replacement springs are available from Beretta, Mec-Gar, and Wolff Gunsprings. Wolff offers extra-power springs that add approximately 10% more force than the OEM specification, which can improve feeding with heavier 147 gr subsonic loads.
Magazine Legal Restrictions
Several U.S. states restrict magazine capacity to 10 rounds or fewer. As of 2024, the following states enforce magazine capacity limits:
- 10-round limit — California, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Hawaii, Rhode Island
- 12-round limit — Colorado (for magazines manufactured or sold after July 1, 2013)
- 15-round limit — Vermont (effective October 1, 2018)
California requires all new magazines sold in the state to be blocked to 10 rounds at the point of manufacture. Pre-owned standard-capacity magazines that were legally possessed before January 1, 2000 may still be retained in some jurisdictions, but check your local and state laws before purchasing any magazine over 10 rounds. The Beretta 10-round magazine (JMC80404) is compliant in all restricted states.

Beretta 92FS M9 — Common Questions
The standard capacity is 15 rounds of 9mm Parabellum in a double-stack, flush-fit steel magazine (model JMC86021). Ten-round versions are available for states with capacity restrictions.
Yes. The 92FS and M9 use identical magazines with the same dimensions, feed geometry, and magazine catch notch position. Any magazine made for the 92FS will function in the M9 and vice versa.
Yes. Mec-Gar manufactures the OEM magazines for Beretta under contract, so Mec-Gar branded magazines use the same tooling, materials, and quality control as factory Beretta magazines. They are trusted by military and law enforcement agencies worldwide.
Press the retention tab on the front of the floor plate forward with a punch or bullet tip, slide the floor plate off the body, and control the spring as it releases. Remove the spring and follower from the tube for cleaning or replacement.
Replace the spring every 3,000 to 5,000 loading cycles, or sooner if the slide fails to lock back on the last round. Storing magazines fully loaded for extended periods (over 6 months) accelerates spring fatigue and may require earlier replacement.
Yes, with the 92-series magazine adapter installed in the CX4 Storm's magazine well. The CX4 ships with a Px4-compatible insert by default, so you must swap it for the 92-series adapter before 92FS magazines will lock in and feed properly.
California, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Hawaii, and Rhode Island enforce a 10-round magazine capacity limit. Colorado limits magazines to 12 rounds, and Vermont to 15 rounds. Purchase the Beretta JMC80404 10-round magazine for compliance in all restricted states.
