About Body Armor Carrier
Level 3 Body Armor
Level 3 body armor is a hard armor plate rated by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) to stop rifle-caliber rounds, including 7.62x51mm 147-grain Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) M80 NATO at velocities up to 2,780 feet per second (847 meters per second) and 7.62x39mm 123-grain PS Ball. Level III body armor is the first protection tier that defeats rifle threats — Level IIA, Level II, and Level IIIA soft body armor stops handgun rounds only. Level 3 plates are manufactured in 3 primary materials: ceramic, steel, and Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE), and each material offers a different balance of weight, thickness, multi-hit capability, and cost. Level III body armor serves law enforcement officers, military personnel, private security operators, and civilians who require rifle-rated ballistic protection. TactaBlue stocks Level 3 and Level III+ body armor plates from RTS Tactical, Spartan Armor Systems, RMA Armament, Guard Dog Body Armor, and Premier Body Armor in standalone and In-Conjunction-With (ICW) configurations alongside plate carriers and soft body armor.
Body Armor Protection Levels
Level IIIA — Handgun Protection
Level IIIA body armor stops handgun rounds up to .44 Magnum Semi-Jacketed Hollow Point (SJHP) at 1,430 feet per second (436 meters per second) and all lesser handgun calibers including 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP. Level IIIA armor is soft body armor — flexible panels made from woven aramid fibers (Kevlar, Twaron) or UHMWPE that conform to the body and fit inside a concealable vest carrier. Level IIIA soft armor does not stop rifle rounds. Law enforcement patrol officers wear Level IIIA soft armor vests as standard daily-wear body armor.
Level III — Basic Rifle Protection
Level III body armor stops 6 rounds of 7.62x51mm NATO M80 Ball (147-grain FMJ) at 2,780 feet per second (847 m/s) on a single plate per NIJ 0101.06 testing standards. Level III armor is hard body armor — rigid plates made from ceramic, steel, or UHMWPE that insert into a plate carrier vest. Standard NIJ Level III certification does not require the plate to stop 5.56x45mm M855 green tip ammunition — the M855 62-grain steel-tip penetrator can defeat some Level III plates depending on the plate material. Steel Level III plates generally stop M855 but struggle with high-velocity M193. UHMWPE Level III plates generally stop M193 but struggle with M855. Choose a Level III+ plate, if protection against both M193 and M855 is required.
Level III+ — Advanced Rifle Protection
Level III+ body armor stops all Level III threats plus additional rifle rounds that exceed the NIJ Level III standard, including 5.56x45mm 55-grain M193 at 3,150 feet per second (960 m/s) and 5.56x45mm 62-grain M855 green tip. The "+" designation is not an official NIJ rating — Level III+ is an industry term that indicates the manufacturer has tested the plate against threats beyond the Level III standard. The specific rounds that a Level III+ plate defeats vary by manufacturer and plate model. Under the upcoming NIJ 0101.07 standard, Level III+ plates that stop M80 NATO, 7.62x39mm MSC, M193, and M855 will be designated RF2 (Rifle Firearm Level 2).
Level IV — Armor-Piercing Rifle Protection
Level IV body armor stops a single round of .30-06 M2 Armor-Piercing (AP) at 2,880 feet per second (878 m/s) per NIJ 0101.06 testing standards. Level IV is the highest NIJ ballistic protection rating and defeats armor-piercing rifle rounds that penetrate Level III and Level III+ plates. Level IV plates use ceramic strike faces bonded to composite backers and weigh 6 to 8 pounds (2.7 to 3.6 kg) per plate in a standard 10 x 12 inch (254 x 305 mm) size. Choose Level IV plates, if the threat environment includes armor-piercing rifle ammunition.
Level III Body Armor Materials
Ceramic Level III Plates
Ceramic Level III plates use an alumina oxide or silicon carbide strike face bonded to a composite backer that breaks apart the incoming projectile on impact and catches the remaining fragments in the backer material. Ceramic plates weigh 5 to 7 pounds (2.3 to 3.2 kg) per plate in a 10 x 12 inch size and measure 0.7 to 1.0 inches (17.8 to 25.4 mm) in thickness. Ceramic plates do not produce spall (fragmentation) on the strike face when hit, which eliminates the need for a separate spall liner. Ceramic plates are more brittle than steel plates and can crack from a severe drop onto a hard surface — inspect ceramic plates for visible cracks or delamination after any impact. RMA Armament builds Level III+ ceramic plates with an alumina oxide strike face and a UHMWPE composite backer that stops M80, M193, M855, and M855A1 rounds.
Steel Level III Plates
Steel Level III plates use AR500 or AR600 hardened steel alloy in 0.25 to 0.375 inches (6.4 to 9.5 mm) thickness that deforms and captures incoming projectiles through the hardness of the steel surface. Steel plates weigh 7 to 9 pounds (3.2 to 4.1 kg) per plate in a 10 x 12 inch size — steel plates are the heaviest Level III option. Steel plates produce spall (bullet fragments that spray outward from the impact point) and require a spall liner, build-up coat, or anti-spall sleeve to mitigate fragmentation injuries to the neck, arms, and face. The RTS Tactical AR600 NIJ 0101.06 Level III+ Special Threat Insert uses AR600 steel with a build-up coat for spall reduction. Steel plates are the most durable Level III material and withstand repeated impacts without structural failure. The Spartan Omega AR500 Steel Body Armor and the AR550 Steel Body Armor are steel plate options available in sets of 2.
UHMWPE (Polyethylene) Level III Plates
Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) Level III plates use compressed polyethylene fibers with a low-density lattice structure that traps air during manufacturing for a lightweight plate that weighs 2.9 to 3.5 pounds (1.3 to 1.6 kg) per plate in a 10 x 12 inch size. UHMWPE plates are the lightest Level III material — a pair of UHMWPE plates weighs less than a single steel plate. The Guard Dog Body Armor Level 3 Ultralight UHMWPE Plate (10 x 12 inches, 2.9 pounds / 1.3 kg per plate, $199.00 single / $399.00 per pair) exceeds NIJ 0101.06 Level III standards and is rated to defeat 6 shots of .308 Winchester (7.62x51mm). UHMWPE plates are 1.0 to 1.1 inches (25.4 to 27.9 mm) thick — thicker than ceramic and steel plates. UHMWPE plates do not produce spall and are buoyant in water. Standard UHMWPE Level III plates stop M193 (55-grain 5.56x45mm) but do not stop M855 green tip (62-grain steel-tip penetrator) without a ceramic strike face supplement.
Level III vs. Level III+ Body Armor
The difference between Level III and Level III+ body armor is the range of rifle threats each plate defeats — Level III stops the NIJ-required 7.62x51mm M80 Ball, and Level III+ stops M80 plus additional threats that the manufacturer has tested against, including M193, M855, and in some cases M855A1. Level III is an official NIJ designation with standardized testing requirements. Level III+ is not an official NIJ designation — the specific threats that a Level III+ plate defeats depend on the manufacturer's testing. Premier Body Armor Stratis Level 3+ plates are tested against M80, M193, and M855. RMA Armament Level 3+ plates are tested against M80, M193, M855, and M855A1. Verify the specific threat list on the manufacturer's product page before purchasing a Level III+ plate, because the "+" label does not guarantee a uniform protection standard across manufacturers.
Level III vs. Level IIIA Body Armor
The difference between Level III and Level IIIA body armor is that Level III is hard armor rated to stop rifle rounds, and Level IIIA is soft armor rated to stop handgun rounds only. Level IIIA soft armor is flexible, concealable, and weighs 1 to 3 pounds (0.5 to 1.4 kg) per panel. Level III hard armor is rigid, requires a plate carrier, and weighs 2.9 to 9 pounds (1.3 to 4.1 kg) per plate depending on material. Level IIIA soft armor does not stop any rifle round. Level 3 soft body armor does not exist — all Level III and higher body armor uses hard armor plates.
Level III Plate Cuts and Sizes
Level III body armor plates are available in 4 primary cut profiles that determine coverage area and mobility.
- ESAPI cut — Enhanced Small Arms Protective Insert (ESAPI) provides the largest coverage area with squared corners and is the standard military plate profile, available in sizes from small (8.75 x 11.75 inches / 222 x 298 mm) to extra-large (11.25 x 14 inches / 286 x 356 mm)
- Shooter's cut — angled top corners that increase arm mobility for rifle shouldering and shooting positions, the most popular cut for law enforcement and civilian plate carriers, standard size 10 x 12 inches (254 x 305 mm)
- Swimmer's cut — deeper angular cuts at the top corners and rounded bottom corners for maximum arm and leg mobility during high-activity operations
- Backpack plate — longer rectangular cut (10 x 15 inches / 254 x 381 mm) designed to fit inside a backpack panel for covert rifle-rated protection in schools, offices, and public spaces
Level III plates are manufactured in single-curve and multi-curve profiles. Single-curve plates have 1 bend along the vertical axis. Multi-curve plates have bends along both the vertical and horizontal axes for a contoured fit that follows the chest shape — multi-curve plates sit closer to the body and distribute weight more evenly than single-curve plates. Choose a multi-curve plate, if comfort during extended wear is a priority.
Plate Carriers for Level III Armor
A plate carrier is a tactical vest with front and rear plate pouches that hold Level III or Level IV hard armor plates against the chest and back. Plate carriers use adjustable shoulder straps, a cummerbund or side straps, and MOLLE (Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment) webbing for attaching magazine pouches, medical kits, and communication equipment. The plate carrier must match the plate size — a 10 x 12 inch plate requires a plate carrier with 10 x 12 inch plate pouches. Plate carriers do not require a specific model for Level III vs. Level III+ plates — any plate carrier that fits the plate dimensions works with Level III, Level III+, or Level IV plates of the same size. Minimalist plate carriers weigh 1 to 2 pounds (0.5 to 0.9 kg) and prioritize mobility. Full-featured tactical plate carriers weigh 3 to 5 pounds (1.4 to 2.3 kg) and provide more attachment points, padding, and load distribution.
Standalone vs. In-Conjunction-With (ICW) Plates
Standalone Level III plates achieve the rated protection level on the plate alone without additional armor backing. ICW plates achieve the rated protection level only when worn in conjunction with a Level IIIA soft armor vest behind the plate — the soft armor backer absorbs residual energy that passes through the hard plate. ICW plates are thinner and lighter than standalone plates of the same protection level because ICW plates rely on the soft armor backer for part of the ballistic performance. The Fortis III+/RF1 ICW Multi-Curve ($270.00) and the Nexus Level III+/RF1 8x10 ICW Plate ($239.00) are ICW plates that require a Level IIIA soft armor backer. Choose standalone plates, if wearing the hard plate inside a plate carrier without soft armor underneath. Choose ICW plates, if wearing the hard plate over an existing Level IIIA soft armor vest.

Backface Deformation and Trauma
Backface deformation is the indentation that forms on the back surface of a body armor plate when a projectile impacts the strike face — even when the plate stops the round, the energy transfer creates a bulge on the body-facing side that can cause blunt force trauma to the chest. NIJ 0101.06 testing allows a maximum backface deformation of 44 mm (1.73 inches) in ballistic clay behind the plate. A trauma pad — a soft foam or polymer insert worn between the plate and the body — reduces the blunt force energy transferred to the chest. Wear a trauma pad behind hard armor plates, if the plate carrier does not include built-in padding on the plate pouch backing.
Level III Body Armor Legality
Civilians can purchase and own Level 3 body armor in 48 states without restrictions — Connecticut prohibits in-person body armor purchases (online purchases are permitted), and New York restricts body armor sales to active law enforcement and military personnel. Federal law prohibits convicted felons from purchasing or possessing body armor. Buyers must be 18 years of age or older. Body armor is legal to wear in public in all 50 states, with local ordinances restricting wear during the commission of a crime. Check state and local laws before purchasing, if located in Connecticut or New York.
Level III Body Armor Maintenance and Lifespan
Level III body armor plates have a manufacturer warranty period of 5 to 8 years depending on the plate material and manufacturer — ceramic plates carry 5 to 7 year warranties, UHMWPE plates carry 5 to 7 year warranties, and steel plates carry 5 to 10 year warranties. Store plates in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight and temperatures above 150°F (65°C) — excessive heat degrades the adhesive bond between ceramic strike faces and composite backers. Inspect plates every 6 months for cracks, delamination, warping, or water intrusion. Replace any plate that shows visible damage, has been impacted by a projectile, or has exceeded the manufacturer's warranty period. Ceramic plates require careful handling — avoid dropping ceramic plates onto hard surfaces from heights above 3 feet (0.9 meters).
Body Armor Carrier — Common Questions
Level 3 body armor stops 7.62x51mm NATO M80 Ball (147-grain FMJ) at 2,780 feet per second, 7.62x39mm 123-grain PS Ball, and all handgun rounds. Standard Level III does not stop 5.56x45mm M855 green tip — choose a Level III+ plate for M855 protection.
Yes, civilians can purchase and own Level 3 body armor in 48 states without restrictions. Connecticut restricts in-person purchases, and New York limits sales to active law enforcement and military. Federal law prohibits convicted felons from owning body armor.
Level 3 body armor weight depends on material. UHMWPE plates weigh 2.9 to 3.5 pounds (1.3 to 1.6 kg) per plate. Ceramic plates weigh 5 to 7 pounds (2.3 to 3.2 kg) per plate. Steel plates weigh 7 to 9 pounds (3.2 to 4.1 kg) per plate. All weights are for a standard 10 x 12 inch size.
Standard Level III plates stop 5.56x45mm 55-grain M193 rounds from most AR-15 rifles. Level III plates do not reliably stop 5.56x45mm 62-grain M855 green tip ammunition. Choose a Level III+ plate that is tested against both M193 and M855 for full AR-15 protection.
No, Level 3 body armor stops all 7.62x39mm rounds fired by an AK-47, including 123-grain PS Ball (Mild Steel Core). Level III certification requires the plate to defeat 7.62x39mm ammunition as part of the NIJ testing standard.
Level 3 is an official NIJ designation that stops 7.62x51mm M80 Ball. Level 3+ is an industry term indicating the plate stops M80 plus additional threats (M193, M855) that the manufacturer has tested against. Level III+ is not an official NIJ rating — protection varies by manufacturer.
No, Level 3 body armor is not easily concealable because Level III plates are rigid, 0.5 to 1.1 inches (12.7 to 27.9 mm) thick, and require a plate carrier. Low-profile plate carriers reduce bulk under a jacket or oversized shirt. Concealable handgun protection requires Level IIIA soft armor.
Level 3 body armor plates carry manufacturer warranties of 5 to 10 years depending on material and brand. Ceramic plates have 5 to 7 year warranties. UHMWPE plates have 5 to 7 year warranties. Steel plates have 5 to 10 year warranties. Replace plates that show cracks, delamination, or impact damage.
No, Level 3 plates are rated to stop ballistic (bullet) threats only and are not designed for stab or edged-weapon protection. Steel plates resist knife penetration through material hardness, but steel plates are not certified for stab resistance. Choose stab-resistant armor rated to NIJ 0115.00, if edged-weapon protection is required.
Choose UHMWPE plates for the lightest weight (2.9 to 3.5 lbs per plate). Choose steel plates for the highest durability and multi-hit capability at the lowest cost. Choose ceramic plates for the best balance of weight and spall-free performance. Steel plates require a spall liner. UHMWPE plates are the thickest option.
