About Glock Magwell

Glock Magwell: Carry, Competition, and Premium Magazine Well Funnels for All Generations

A Glock magwell is a funnel-shaped attachment that mounts to the base of the Glock grip frame and guides the magazine into the magazine well during reloads. A magwell reduces reload time by expanding the magazine insertion opening from the factory 0.90-inch (23 mm) width to 1.10-1.40 inches (28-36 mm) depending on the magwell design. TactaBlue stocks Glock magwells from Dawson Precision, Taran Tactical Innovations (TTI), Shield Arms, Springer Precision, Overwatch Precision, and Floyds Custom Shop for Gen 3, Gen 4, Gen 5, Gen 6, and Slimline (G43X, G48) frames in aluminum, brass, and polymer materials.

There are 2 primary benefits of a Glock magwell: faster reloads and zero compromises on grip ergonomics. A properly fitted magwell funnels the magazine into the grip without adding significant bulk to the grip profile. Competition shooters, defensive shooters, and concealed carry users all benefit from a magwell that matches the intended application.

Why Use a Glock Magwell

Faster Reloads

A Glock magwell reduces reload time by 0.2 to 0.5 seconds per reload by providing a larger target for magazine insertion. Under stress, fine motor skills degrade, and the wider magwell funnel compensates for imprecise magazine alignment. Competition shooters in United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) and International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) divisions use magwells to shave time from stage transitions.

Zero Compromises

Modern Glock magwells are designed to add minimal bulk and weight to the grip while providing maximum funnel area. Carry magwells add 0.1 to 0.3 oz (3 to 9 g) and extend 0.10 to 0.15 inches (2.5 to 3.8 mm) below the factory grip. Competition magwells add 0.5 to 2.0 oz (14 to 57 g) and extend 0.25 to 0.50 inches (6 to 13 mm) below the factory grip.

Magwell Fitment by Glock Generation

Gen 3 Magwells

Gen 3 Glock magwells fit frames with 3-pin construction and the Gen 3 grip backstrap profile. Gen 3 magwells from Dawson Precision Ice and TTI are available for standard small frame models (G19, G23) and standard full frame models (G17, G22, G34, G35).

Gen 4 Magwells

Gen 4 Glock magwells fit frames with the modular backstrap system and reversible magazine catch. Gen 4 magwells require removal of the modular backstrap before installation. Dawson Precision Ice magwells are available for Gen 4 standard and compact frames.

Gen 5 Magwells

Gen 5 Glock frames include a factory flared magwell that provides a slight funnel effect from the factory. Aftermarket Gen 5 magwells from Dawson Precision, TTI, Shield Arms, and Springer Precision expand the funnel beyond the factory flare. Gen 5 magwells fit the G17, G19, G22, G23, G34, G44, and G45.

Gen 6 Magwells

Gen 6 Glock magwells fit the updated Gen 6 grip geometry introduced in 2025. Dawson Precision Tactical Advantage magwells and Shield Arms Carry and Premium magwells are available for the G17 Gen 6 and G19 Gen 6.

Types of Glock Magwells

Carry Magwells

Carry magwells are low-profile designs that add minimal bulk for concealed carry applications. Carry magwells extend 0.10 to 0.15 inches (2.5 to 3.8 mm) below the factory grip and add 0.1 to 0.3 oz (3 to 9 g). Shield Arms SA Carry Magwells and Overwatch Precision Carry Magwells are designed for concealed carry without printing.

Premium Magwells

Premium magwells provide a balance between carry concealability and competition funnel size. Premium magwells extend 0.15 to 0.25 inches (3.8 to 6 mm) below the factory grip. Shield Arms SA Premium Magwells are available for G17, G19, G43X, and G48 across Gen 5 and Gen 6.

Competition Magwells

Competition magwells provide the largest funnel area for maximum reload speed in USPSA, IDPA, and other competition formats. Competition magwells extend 0.25 to 0.50 inches (6 to 13 mm) below the grip and add 0.5 to 2.0 oz (14 to 57 g). TTI Full Size Competition Magwells and Springer Precision Brass Competition Magwells are designed for competition use. Check USPSA and IDPA division rules for magwell legality before competition use.

Magwell Materials

Aluminum Magwells

Aluminum magwells are machined from 6061-T6 or 7075-T6 aluminum billet and anodized in multiple colors. Aluminum magwells weigh 0.3 to 1.0 oz (9 to 28 g) and provide a durable, lightweight funnel. Dawson Precision Ice, TTI, and Shield Arms use aluminum construction for most magwell models.

Brass Magwells

Brass magwells are machined from solid brass and add 1.5 to 2.0 oz (43 to 57 g) of weight to the grip for improved balance and recoil management. Springer Precision Brass Competition Magwells use the added weight to lower the center of gravity for flatter shooting during competition. The brass weight counterbalances the muzzle rise during rapid fire.

Polymer Magwells

Polymer magwells are injection-molded from reinforced polymer and provide the lightest magwell option at 0.1 to 0.3 oz (3 to 9 g). Polymer magwells are the most affordable option and work well for concealed carry applications where weight is a priority.

Magwell Installation

To install a Glock magwell, remove the magazine, lock the slide to the rear, and slide the magwell onto the grip frame from below until the retention mechanism engages. Most aftermarket magwells use either a set screw, a spring clip, or a friction fit. Remove any modular backstrap before installing a magwell on Gen 4 frames. Installation takes 1 to 3 minutes without tools on most models. A magwell pairs with an extended slide release and extended magazine base pads for a complete reload optimization setup.
