About Fits Glock 17

Glock 17 Magazine: The Full-Size 9mm Standard for OEM, Extended, and PCC Platforms

A Glock 17 magazine is a double-stack, polymer-bodied ammunition feeding device that holds 17 rounds of 9x19mm Parabellum and inserts into the full-size Glock 17 grip. The Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) Glock 17 magazine measures 4.74 inches (120 mm) in length, weighs 2.71 oz (77 g) empty, and uses a hardened steel insert encased in high-tech polymer to protect the magazine body and prevent deformation. The high-quality spring and polymer follower ensure reliable feeding from the first round fed by a fully compressed spring down to the last shot. The double cut magazine body works with a reversed magazine catch on Gen 4, Gen 5, and Gen 6 Glock pistol models. TactaBlue stocks Glock 17 magazines from Glock OEM, Magpul, Elite Tactical Systems (ETS), Mec-Gar, and ProMag in standard and extended capacities.

The Glock 17 magazine is the most versatile magazine in the Glock ecosystem. Glock 17 magazines fit 8 Glock models: the G17 (all generations), G17L, G18, G19 (extends below grip), G26 (with grip sleeve), G34, G45, and G47. The Glock 17 magazine is also compatible with 12+ pistol caliber carbine (PCC) platforms, making the G17 magazine the foundation for both handgun and carbine 9mm systems.

Glock 17 Magazine Capacity and Configurations

There are 5 OEM Glock 17 magazine capacity configurations:

  • 10-round state-compliant magazines for restricted jurisdictions
  • 17-round standard flush-fit magazines that sit flush with the G17 full-size grip
  • 19-round magazines using the G17+2 extended base pad (Magazine G17+2 19 RD in 9mm Luger)
  • 24-round extended magazines for range, competition, and home defense
  • 33-round extended magazines for PCC platforms and high-volume shooting

The G17+2 19-round magazine uses the standard 17-round magazine body with an extended polymer base plate that adds 2 rounds of capacity. The G17+2 base plate extends 0.47 inches (12 mm) below the standard floor plate. Aftermarket options include the Magpul PMAG 17 GL9 (17-round), Magpul PMAG D-50 GL9 (50-round drum), ETS Group 17-round translucent, ETS Group 31-round extended, ProMag 32-round, and Mec-Gar 20-round with extension.

Glock 17 Magazine Construction and Components

The OEM Glock 17 magazine is constructed from a hardened steel insert encased in durable polymer with 7 components: the polymer body with steel reinforcement, steel-lined feed lips, coated steel compression spring, polymer follower (black or orange), floor plate, floor plate locking tab, and floor plate insert. The magazine body features viewing windows (witness holes) for visual confirmation of the remaining round count without disassembling the magazine.

Double-Stack Feed Design

The Glock 17 magazine uses a staggered-column (double-stack) design that narrows to a single-feed presentation at the steel feed lips. The staggered column spring tension pushes cartridges upward in an alternating left-right pattern. The feed lips control the release timing of each cartridge as the slide strips rounds during the forward stroke. The follower tilts at the last round to engage the slide stop lever and lock the slide to the rear on an empty magazine.

Magazine Spring and Follower

The Glock 17 magazine spring is a metal compression spring rated for 50,000+ compression cycles before requiring replacement. Gen 5 and Gen 6 magazines use an orange polymer follower for visual empty-magazine confirmation. Gen 1-4 magazines use a black follower. Both follower colors function identically. The follower maintains consistent cartridge positioning across the full 17-round stack from a fully compressed spring down to the last round.

Glock 17 Magazine Compatibility Across Models

Glock Models That Accept G17 Magazines

The Glock 17 magazine fits 8 Glock pistol models: the G17 (Gen 1-6), G17L (long slide), G18 (select fire), G19 (extends below compact grip), G26 (extends below subcompact grip), G34 (competition), G45 (crossover), and G47 (full-size MOS). The Glock 19 magazine holds 15 rounds and does not fit the G17 because the shorter magazine body does not engage the G17 magazine catch.

Glock 17 Magazine in Pistol Caliber Carbines

Glock 17 magazines are compatible with 12+ pistol caliber carbine (PCC) platforms, including the KRISS Vector, CZ Scorpion with Glock adapter, Ruger PC Carbine, Kel-Tec Sub-2000, PSA AR-9, Aero Precision EPC-9, and CMMG Banshee. The 33-round Glock magazine is the most popular PCC magazine due to extended capacity and proven reliability in carbine-length platforms. PCC use increases magazine cycling rates, which accelerates spring fatigue - inspect springs every 5,000 rounds in PCC applications.

Generation Compatibility

All Glock 17 magazines are cross-compatible across Gen 1 through Gen 6 frames. Gen 6 magazines are backward-compatible with Gen 1-5 G17 frames. The only generation-specific magazine feature is the reversed magazine catch on Gen 4, Gen 5, and Gen 6 frames, which the double cut magazine body accommodates without separate magazine versions.

Magpul PMAG 17 GL9

The Magpul PMAG 17 GL9 is a 17-round polymer magazine with a stainless steel spring, anti-tilt follower, and paint-pen dot matrix for visual identification. The PMAG GL9 uses Magpul's proprietary polymer blend and a constant-curve internal geometry for reliable feeding. The PMAG GL9 fits all Glock 9mm double-stack models and is compatible with the Magpul GL Enhanced Magazine Well.

ETS Magazines for Glock 17

Elite Tactical Systems (ETS) manufactures translucent polymer Glock 17 magazines in 17-round, 22-round, 27-round, 31-round, and 40-round configurations. The translucent body allows visual round-count verification through the magazine wall without relying on witness holes. ETS magazines are available in clear, smoke, blue, orange, and red translucent colors. ETS Glock 17 magazines use steel feed lips and a steel compression spring.

Mec-Gar Glock 17 Magazines

Mec-Gar produces 20-round Glock 17 magazines with an extended floor plate that adds 3 rounds over the standard 17-round OEM capacity. Mec-Gar magazines use a nickel-plated steel body with a polymer follower and a heat-treated steel spring.

Glock 17 Magazine Accessories

Magazine Extensions and Base Pads

Glock 17 magazine base pad extensions increase capacity from the standard 17 rounds. The Taran Tactical Innovations (TTI) Firepower Base Pad Kit adds +3 to +5 rounds. Hyve Technologies base pads add +2 to +3 rounds in 15+ anodized aluminum colors. ZEV Technologies base pads add +5 rounds with an aluminum body. A Glock magwell funnels the magazine into the grip for faster reloads when paired with standard or extended base pad magazines.

Magazine Loaders

The Maglula UpLULA universal pistol magazine loader fits all Glock 17 double-stack 9mm magazines and reduces thumb fatigue during loading. The Glock OEM speed loader is designed for Glock double-stack 9mm magazines and retails at a lower price point than the UpLULA.

Magazine Pouches and Carriers

Glock 17 magazine pouches are available in single, double, and triple configurations from Blade-Tech, Safariland, and Comp-Tac. Kydex and injection-molded polymer pouches provide adjustable retention. Nylon pouches offer a lower-cost option for range use.

Glock 17 Magazine Maintenance

Feed Lip Inspection

Inspect Glock 17 magazine feed lips for visible spreading, cracking, or asymmetric cartridge positioning every 5,000 rounds. Steel-lined feed lips on OEM magazines resist spreading under spring pressure across 50,000+ loading cycles. Replace the magazine when the feed lip spread exceeds 0.02 inches (0.5 mm) from factory specification.

Spring Replacement and High Round Count Rebuilds

Glock 17 magazine springs lose approximately 5% of tension after 10,000 compression cycles. A high round count rebuild involves replacing the compression spring and follower. Replacement springs are available from Glock OEM, Wolff Gunsprings, and ISMI. Cold weather spring fatigue occurs below 0 degrees F (-18 degrees C) - test magazine function with carry ammunition at temperature before relying on cold-weather performance.

Cleaning and Storage

Clean Glock 17 magazines every 1,000 rounds or after exposure to dirt, sand, or saltwater. Disassemble the magazine by pressing the floor plate locking tab with a punch tool, sliding the floor plate forward, and removing the spring, follower, and floor plate insert. Wipe the interior with a dry cloth. Apply a light coat of silicone-based lubricant to the spring. Store magazines loaded to full capacity - modern steel springs lose tension from cycling, not from sustained compression.

Glock 17 Caliber Variants and Magazine Differences

The Glock 17 fires 9x19mm Parabellum (9mm Luger). The .40 S&W equivalent is the Glock 22, and the .357 SIG equivalent is the Glock 31. Glock 22 and Glock 31 magazines use different feed lip geometry and are not interchangeable with Glock 17 9mm magazines. The 10mm equivalent is the Glock 20, and the .45 ACP equivalent is the Glock 21. Each caliber requires dedicated magazines matched to the cartridge dimensions.

Glock 17 Magazine State Compliance

Magazine capacity restrictions vary by state. The Glock 17 10-round magazine complies with all current state capacity restrictions. The standard 17-round magazine is legal in 40+ states. TactaBlue does not ship magazines exceeding local capacity limits to restricted jurisdictions. Verify magazine legality in your state before purchasing.
